I have been trying to make small changes in my own life to help the environment.  So when Reel reached out to see if we would review their bamboo toilet paper subscription box,  I jumped at the opportunity.  Before now, I never really thought about swapping out our household toilet paper, however, once I started researching everything it makes sense.

On top of the environmental impact, Reel is also giving back.  See a below excerpt from their mission:

“2.4 billion people are forced to defecate outside — meaning lost dignity, deadly pathogens, contaminated water, and loss of life.

Our mission is clear. For every roll you buy, we donate a single-use biodegradable toilet to someone in need.

Our toilets neutralize bacteria so waste can be turned into valuable fertilizer. Starting in Kenya, people now have a healthier, safer option.”

They have donated 21.741 toilets to date, which is incredible!  We know their mission is amazing, but how does the toilet paper compare to what we already use?

Why choose bamboo?

Did you know 27,000 trees are cut down each day just to create toilet paper?  That is a whole lot of trees.  Toilet paper made with bamboo is simply a more sustainable alternative when compared to traditional toilet paper.   Especially when you consider that bamboo grows three feet in twenty-four hours.  Also, bamboo requires 30% less water to grow when compared to trees!  But again, how does this type of paper compare to what I’m already using?

How does it compare?

Typically we use either Charmin or the Kirkland branded toilet paper in my home.  My family tends to like their paper on the softer side.  While the Reel toilet paper is 3 ply, I wouldn’t say it is AS soft as we are used to using.  It isn’t hard either though.  I would put it in a happy medium as far as softness goes.  Also, the unique composition of bamboo means this paper is naturally tough and has great tensile strength.  Everyone in my family agreed that it was stronger than what we were using before.  So while it wasn’t quite as soft, it made up for it in its strength!

Overall

The quality is great!  I also love how each roll is wrapped in the paper since that makes it look a little nicer in the bathrooms.  Each roll comes out to cost $1.25, which is double what I pay for regular toilet paper.  Even still I believe that the benefit to the environment and the fact that Reel is giving back makes it worth the increased price.  Sometimes doing the right thing costs us all a little more money, and I’m ok with that.  Personally, I would most likely sign up to get a box every 12 weeks in an effort to do my part while also keeping my budget in check.
