Background

My son is now five years old and I as I think back on the time in my life when he was a newborn I can’t help but realize that it really does fly by way too fast.  My pregnancy was easy enough, I loved the feeling of him moving around in my belly.  Although, after him staying in my belly eleven days past his due date, I was ready to get him out of there.  The day I was scheduled to be induced I, fortunately, went into labor.  Hours before my appointment we rushed to the hospital and started the birthing process.

My birth story was anything but easy.  I pushed for hours and eventually had a c-section.  I was exhausted, but it was also the best day of my life.  Coming home was a huge awakening, my life was forever changed and I was dealing with the healing from the c-section at the same time.  Breastfeeding didn’t come easy either, however, my husband was so supportive and we finally got into the swing of it.  I was lucky enough to stay home for five months with my son.  And after returning to work I was able to continue to breastfeed as well as pump for a total of thirteen months.  I always had a low supply, however, it was enough to get by.

Inserts

Included in The Mighty Mama subscription box included many inserts.  My favorite one was the link for a postpartum work out by Simply Fit with Ashley.   I thought it was neat to include a workout for new moms since it is always important to remember to take care of yourself when you have a young child.  There were also handouts with sleep tips and breastfeeding tips that would be helpful for new mamas.

The Milk Maids – Lactation Cookies

Estimated Retail Value: $4.50

I don’t need lactation cookies at this point in my life, however, I was always curious about them when I was breastfeeding.  I never ended up trying them back then, but I wished I would have.  These cookies tasted amazing.  They were so soft and the flavors were delightful.   While it was nice that the ingredients were listed on the Mighty Mama insert, it would have been even better to have the different flavors listed on the cookie packages as well.  I didn’t see the sample pack listed on their Etsy account but did see a story on their Instagram that listed a sample pack as $4.50.  If I end up having a second baby, I will be trying these to boost my milk supply.

Promise Prenatal Vitamins

Retail Value: $24.80

There isn’t too much I can say about these vitamins since I don’t have a baby.  The reviews online have been good though.  I  checked out their Instagram where I saw that “Each purchase provides vitamins to a woman in need”.  At the very least, I thought that was really neat.  I will be gifting these vitamins to one of my closest friends who will be welcoming their new baby in a few months.

Calming Oil

Estimated Retail Value: $5

I love the concept of having a calming roller included in this box, however, I can’t say that I’m impressed with the one that was chosen.  It was not only really small, but there also wasn’t anything other than the retailer’s information labeled on the bottle itself.  The ingredients were listed on the Mighty Mama insert. however. The scent was pretty nice, however, the roller itself wasn’t the greatest quality and the ball would get stuck here and there. I tried to find out more information on the company that produced this product, however, the only website that was linked to their Instagram was one for DoTerra.  As far as I can tell these are DoTerra oils that have been repackaged into a smaller sized roller bottle.  While I don’t have anything against DoTerra, I felt like this product was a sample sized item that was more of a way for the salesperson to reach potential customers rather than benefitting new mothers.

“You’ve Got This, Mama” Paperback Book

Retail Value: $18.10

I am loving the book so far, and it is a good read for all moms, not just new moms.  Which is perfect, since I feel like it would be hard to be a mom of a newborn and have time to read.  I know everyone is different and I have a few friends that could easily read during pumping, breastfeeding, and nap times.  Personally, that wasn’t my experience.  I was so overwhelmed as a new mom trying to feed my son, keep the house in decent shape, and shower that I couldn’t sit down and read a book.  However, once my son was over about ten months I feel like I would have loved having this book.  I like that an item was included that new and experienced moms can enjoy!  Also, the book is autographed by the author, how cool is that?

Overall

While this box would have been perfectly suited to me, I can see how some of the items might not work for all new mothers.  I think it is really hard to curate a one size fits all box geared towards new mothers when every birth story is so different.  It would be great if subscribers could answer a few questions to make the box a little more equipped to their needs.  Questions such as: how old is your child(ren), how was the delivery, are you breastfeeding, etc.  Items that I would love after my birth are very different than what I would expect other mothers would fancy.  I could see moms that weren’t able to breastfeed feeling a bit down about getting items that are more for mothers that are able to and choosing to breastfeed.  The overall price of the box is a bit higher than I’m used to reviewing, however, that isn’t a deterrent for me.  You can’t put a price on getting a box to help you through one of the biggest changes in your life.  I would have loved to get a monthly boxed when I was home with my newborn!
