We were recently contacted about reviewing these plant-based replenishment drinks from Après. When I think of protein drinks I think of two things: bodybuilders and my mom mixing up her chalky Slim-Fast drinks when I was a child. Neither of which fit into my lifestyle. Thankfully after looking at their website, I could tell that Après doesn’t fit either of those scenarios. And while I‘m not vegan, I am still following my low carb lifestyle. These drinks will fit an acceptable daily range of both carbs and fiber that I try to stay within. Needless to say, I was thrilled when my sample box arrived.
Benefits of drinking Après
The shakes are perfect to use as an on-the-go breakfast, between-meal snack, or post-workout replenisher. Personally, I love the convenience factor, just chill, shake, and enjoy! Based on the ingredients I would expect these drinks to fill you up and keep your energy level high for at least a few hours. Plus, with my low-carb lifestyle, I really like the inclusion of MCT since sometimes I have a hard time hitting my daily intake goals for fat. Sea Salt Chocolate
Sea Salt Chocolate is such a fun flavor to taste test. I was really looking forward to a sweet and savory kick to this drink. While I wouldn’t say I noticed any salt flavor, the chocolate was very apparent. My first sip was different than what I was expecting so it did take me some getting used to. I could taste the coconut water through the chocolate and actually really liked that refreshing burst. I didn’t notice any chalky aftertaste which tends to be pretty normal with most protein-type drinks. Best of all, this flavor had a perfect creamy texture to it. Nothing dull about it.
Mint Chocolate
Personally, this was my least favorite flavor in our pack. I didn’t notice the overwhelming mint flavor that I was expecting. The overall taste was pretty bland. While I wouldn’t say it was terrible, I can say that if I were to order Après in the future, I would skip ordering this flavor. All that being said, it was nice to have something to drink on my way to a lunchtime appointment. I didn’t have to fuss with eating a snack in the car which was super helpful!
Cold Brew Coffee
This flavor contains as much caffeine as a typical cup of coffee, which also makes it the perfect drink to consume on my long commute to work each morning. While I enjoy drinking hot coffee in the cold winter PNW months, I can see this Cold Brew Flavor taking over my morning routine in the coming summer months. How convenient to not have to brew coffee in the mornings? The overall flavor was very good, it is comparable to a cup of coffee with cream and a tad of sweetener. This was my second favorite flavor in our box.
Vanilla Bean
This was my favorite flavor in our box. It had a light and subtle taste but was still very invigorating. I drank this one as a morning snack between breakfast and lunch and was left surprisingly full for hours. I’m sure that vanilla wouldn’t be most people’s favorite flavor, but for me, the simplicity was much appreciated.
Overall
I can honestly say that I give these shakes two thumbs up. I am happy to have found a premixed drink that keeps me full and gives me a burst of energy. This is my first time trying a plant-based protein drink, so I can’t say if there are better ones on the market. However, I can say that I would order these in the future to have on hand for hectic mornings. Since they are vegan, gluten, dairy, and soy-free, just about anyone can enjoy their drinks guilt-free. At $3.33 per drink, I don’t think the price point is outrageous. However, I could see limiting myself to only having may two per week to keep my costs down.
