MUD\WTR – A Coffee Alternative – Full Review

I am a coffee addict.  There, I said it.  Since my early 20s, I have steadily consumed at least one cup of sweet, delicious java per day.  So when MUD/WTR reached out to see if I would review their coffee alternative I really had to think it over.  Lately, I had been thinking that coffee is more of a ritual for me than a jolt of energy.  It made me wonder how much benefit I was actually getting from drinking it each day.  And could MUD/WTR be the wake-up I needed (pun intended).  So, I accepted the challenge and switched my cups of coffee out for MUD/WTR for one week to see if they could convert me.  Read my thoughts below.

I have to admit, the name MUD/WTR was a bit off-putting.  But if I wanted to give it a real go I needed to look past the name and more at what they had to offer.  While I love the ritual of my morning coffee, I don’t love the anxious feeling I get after too much, or the migraine I get without enough.  When reviewing the booklet that MUD/WTR sent over I noticed that their alternative still has caffeine…just a more suitable amount.

What is MUD/WTR?

Surely it isn’t really mud, right?  I went to the source…the MUD/WTR website to see what was in their product.  Each ingredient looks better than the next…just see for yourself:

MUD\WTR™ is a coffee alternative consisting of organic ingredients lauded by cultures old and young for their health and performance benefits. With 1/7th the caffeine of coffee, mud gives you natural energy, focus, and more without the jitters and crash.

Cacao, Masala chai, Turmeric, Sea salt, Cinnamon, Chaga, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Lion’s mane.

Just look at all those nourishing ingredients!  Together they create a super blend that should help with focus, natural energy, mood, and a healthy immune system.  But how will mud taste?  I was sent over both the Morning and Evening Ritual Starter Kits.  Let’s dive right in!

MORNING RITUAL

Morning Ritual Starter Kit

As you can see, the starter kit had everything that I needed to start my MUD/WTR journey.  They even include an extremely thorough guide that includes helpful tips for the expedition, a USB frother, and samples of their creamer, sweetener, and :rest blend (the full-size version comes in the Evening Ritual Starter Kit).  The guide is hands down, the best I have ever received in a subscription box.  Every page was more great information that I referred to several times over the past few weeks.  And the frother is pure perfection.  I love that it is charged via a USB cable.

After trying several of the recipes from the guide, I have narrowed down my favorites. The “Slightly Sweet Mud Latte” was perfect on a cold morning when I felt like I NEEDED my coffee.  The overall taste reminded me of a chai latte, which is one of my favorites.  I had expected the texture to be a bit gritty, however, was happy that it was on the smoother side.  While I wouldn’t say the recipe made for an extremely SWEET latte, I didn’t feel like I was missing out as it did have a bit of sweetener in it.  This recipe ended up being my 2nd favorite.

Not to brag, but the Seattle area recently had our 2nd 70-degree day this year, so you know I had to make an “Iced Mud” to celebrate the warm weather!  Hands down, this was my favorite way to drink mud.  Again, I got a bit of a chia latte taste and loved it.  I was happy with every single version of mud that I tried,  As for focus and natural energy, it was more of a slow and steady increase vs the jolt/crash that I’m used to with coffee. There are so many recipes available on the MUD/WTR website that I can’t wait to try (I’m looking at you Pumpkin Spiced Mud Latte).

EVENING RITUAL

The Evening Ritual Starter Kit also came with a frother, a full-size bag of creamer, samples of their creamer, sweetener, and the ever-helpful guide.  The :rest blend was created as a protest to hustle culture, which is something I can get behind.  After having spent years working myself to the point of exhaustion, it was only recently that I realized my health was suffering because of it.

I drank :rest five nights in a row to see if it would have an impact on my sleep and daily energy levels.  The taste is almost like if you were to mix hot cocoa with chai.  Although I didn’t expect to enjoy drinking “coffee” at nighttime, I have to say it was a great way to wind myself down. It also made me slow down and reflect on the day which was a happy outcome.  As far as sleep went, I did notice an improvement in the time it took me to fall asleep.  And the mornings didn’t seem to come as quickly as they normally do.  Overall, I felt like a champ each day.  This will become a part of my nightly routine, no question about it.
