Alright well – let’s preface this with I am in no shape or form any kind of baker. In fact, I may be a disaster in the kitchen. So was I nervous to try this box? Yes! However, Foodstirs really piqued my interest the moment I read their website. I tend to not think too much about organic food but, I also prefer to buy healthy (or healthier) alternatives, especially for my little one. So when we were able to find a subscription that promises to clean up the sweet treats we all occasionally crave, we could not turn it down!

After researching their website, their desserts claim to be lower sugar, USDA organic and non-gmo, they use fair-trade chocolate, and they are considered to be Glyphosate® Residue Free which means their products don’t contain a popular herbicide that other baking ingredients (or food products) may have.

As you can see from the above photo, January & February’s theme was Unicorn Cake Pops. Yum! Upon opening the box, I saw that there were very clear written instructions and all the dry ingredients that would be required for some yummy unicorn pops!

It was nice that the ingredients and nutritional facts were perfectly laid out and easy to read, as well as all the ingredients. Even if something is organic, it does not guarantee that an ingredient may not fit within someone’s diet. Also, this will require you to use some of your own perishable items, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Are these not the cutest stickers? They were included to decorate the pops after they were made. My daughter’s excitement to use them was off the charts.

The ingredients that are needed on top of the dry ones that came within the box include – eggs, milk, butter, and greek yogurt. I’m honestly not too sure if a vegan alternative would work for the cake but, I imagine it could. One thing I forgot to do was make the butter room temperature upon starting this adventure, so do not forget to do that! Also, do not forget to pre-heat the oven! (Luckily I remembered to do this but, I’ve been pretty unlucky in the past)

The first step for the cake was to mix the eggs, butter, yogurt, and milk together. Again, make sure that the butter is room temperature, otherwise, it makes it somewhat difficult to stir.

After this, I slowly poured the cake batter into the bowl and began to stir my little heart out. I used just a normal whisk but, it may have made the batter smoother to use an electric one. I, however, do not own one since I’m really not a baker. Once the batter was all smoothed out, I poured it into a pan and then popped it into the oven at 350 F Degrees. I kept an eye on my cake since the directions suggest about 25-27 minutes to bake the cake. For me, it was closer to 25 minutes.

I realize I inadvertently forgot to take a photo once the cake was finished but, I allowed it to cool for close to an hour. The instructions say at least 15 minutes but, I wanted to make sure the cake was cooled down. Otherwise, a warm/slightly hot cake would make things much more difficult.

The box also comes with these plastic holders to make the cake pops. I haven’t seen these contraptions before so it was cool to get enough of them to make 6 cake pops!

Next, came creating the icing! The box came with the dry ingredient for it but, it also requires butter and greek yogurt. Again, make sure your butter is room temperature, as you will need to whisk the butter and yogurt together. I then slowly added in the icing. It came out super thick so I added a bit more yogurt to it. I think I may have added too much to it unfortunately because it did come out a bit runny.

In order to create the cool unicorn colors, the box also contained 2 packets of food dye to create the icing; one pink, one blue. ]I took half the pink packet, poured it within the icing, half the blue, and poured it in the second bowl. For the third one, I took the remaining color packet and was able to make purple! The food dye packets were plant-based which is really cool, as opposed to the normal food dyes you see at a normal grocery store.

As I mentioned above, Even though the icing was runnier than I wanted, it tasted really really good! I was pleasantly surprised.

The instructions indicated that once the cake was cool, to use the round edge of the holder to cut out at least 24 layers of cake. That way each cake pop could have 4 layers. I believe it was the pan  I was using and the way the cake came out but, my cake pieces were much thicker than the instructions appeared. So, instead, three layers of cake went into each cake pop, and then my daughter and I had fun trying to use all the icings to create different cake pops.

As you can see ours did not come out…err exactly like the picture above but, they tasted SO good! The cake had a very sweet vanilla flavor (which was surprising given it was less sugar) and the icing was sweet but, not too much that it was overpowering. I think we can all picture in our mind those horribly sweet grocery store icings we’ve all had.

Here are a few more creations that I made with my daughter. Also, the box came with sugar sprinkles to put on top. They were the best topping to finish off these delicious treats.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this was such a fun box to complete. I only wish I was a better baker so the photos could have turned out a little bit better. Even though they didn’t really turn out how I pictured in my mind, the taste was so good. I love that there are companies out there that are passionate and dedicate their businesses to offering healthy alternatives. Personally, I have a very sweet tooth sometimes so I crave desserts. Having a monthly box like this would come in handy so I can not only have something deliciously sweet but, it’s also a good alternative to a super sweet snack that has some questionable ingredients.

I believe this also sets up people for better eating habits. I truly never thought I could use greek yogurt in a cake! Now I do and I plan to try that in the future.

Also, according to FoodStir’s website, they offer a lot of amazing dessert options! “Bestselling Junk-Free Organic Baking Kits and Baking Mixes Get that from-scratch taste without all of the added sugar and yucky stuff with our bestselling junk-free organic cookie, brownie, cake mixes and baking kits. “Bake it happen” with our super-easy baking kits that bring loved ones and children together for fun eats! Whether you’re looking for organic Keto, indulgent brownie mixes, cake or cookie mixes, we’ve got ’em all.” From what I can see there’s donuts, brownies, and much more. So much yum!
