The October theme for Kid Wonder is “Let’s Play Animal Hospital”!  As always, the contents are listed on the outside of the box.  Inside the box, there was a welcome letter from Scout (the mascot), an activity book that matches the monthly theme,  an insert that gave more details on each project, and four packets of activities to complete.

Project 1 – Dress Like a Vet!

Each month the first activity is dressing up for the theme of the box.  I love this for one main reason, it gets my son excited about what is in store for the rest of the box.  This is the first time we have received a shirt for the dress up activity though and my son was very excited.  Since his size wasn’t asked I wasn’t sure it would fit, however it was perfect so that was a huge plus!  Also included in this packet were supplies to make a stethoscope and a mirror headband.  My son likes to complete the craft projects by himself and I love to sit back and watch him follow the directions.  To complete the veterinarian outfit, there was a face mask and a name tag with a retractable holder included.  The retractable clip was the highlight for my son.  It was “just like Mommy uses at work” and made him feel very grown up.

Project 2 – Pet Clinic!

The next activity was to create our own pet clinic.  This project came with all the usual essentials (paints, brush, smock, mess mat) as well as some wooden characters for us to paint.   I always enjoy watching my son get creative and love that they include everything we need for a fun night.  Much like the play barn we received in our July box, they included a mini pet clinic this month.  The difference this month was that the velcro was already attached and ready to be more easily assembled.  All of our supplies from the next activity fit perfectly in this little case so that was a huge plus from an organizational standpoint.  Another fun activity was the Move Like An Animal game.  My son and I played this game for over an hour.   I really like when they include fun games that get us moving.  We will be playing this again in the future for sure.

Project 3 – Time For Your Check Up!

This activity had a lot going on and my son played “check-up” for hours with various stuffies.  I love when Kid Wonder includes a Business Plan for my son to fill out.  While he is only 4, he is a pretty deep thinker and generally plans out all those details as he is playing.  Having a place for him to document his thoughts really solidifies his “plan” for him.  The included stuffed puppy was really cute and the perfect size for all the tools.  We named him Tank and turns out he had a boo boo on his paw.  No worries though, Dr. Wesley was able to fix him up and get him the medicine he needed.

Project 4 – Construct Your X-Ray Machine!

My son was so ready to start this activity that I didn’t get pictures of the contents before we dove in.  Included in this packet were supplies to recycle our box into an x-ray machine.  It was surprisingly easy and only took my son about ten minutes to construct the x-ray and start examining included x-ray of his puppy.  Also included were two blank sheets for my son to draw his own slides, however, he ended up drawing monster trucks instead.  The last item in this activity was a lacing card kit.  The objective was to stitch up the bunny’s boo boo.  I thought this was a very clever way to incorporate some fine motor skills into this months box.  I have been meaning to get some of these types of act-ivies for my son so I was really excited!

Overall

My son and I have had the pleasure of reviewing several of the Kid Wonder boxes.  This one seemed a little different from the past boxes.  Almost like they are shaking up the activities.  I actually really appreciated that.  I always really liked going into the box knowing about what I could expect.  However, I noticed this month my son was a little hesitant to start this box.  Normally he is really excited.  He pointed out that we already knew what will be in there and listed a few guesses….boy was he wrong.  And this is one time he was happy to be wrong.  He is on the older end of the suggested age range, so I think keeping him excited month after month is harder than the younger kids.  Another thing I really like about Kid Wonder is the fact that you can go back and shop past boxes (limited quantities).  I know there are some past boxes that a lot of kids in my life would love!
