I am THAT mom that loves to get her son involved in crafts. My son is THAT kid that will pull random craft supplies out and create whatever come to his mind at any given time. I have always loved to craft so having my son show interest in my hobby has been really fun for me. When we were approached to review the Kids’N’Craftz subscription box I figured it was a perfect fit for us.
One thing to note, they offer boxes varied by three age groups. I wasn’t aware of that and didn’t let them know my son’s age (4). That being said, we were sent the box for ages 6-8 years old. Upon opening the box I realized it was a little above my son’s skills, however figured that he would still have fun completing the activities.
Vincent Van Gogh
Since this project involved clay my son decided this was the best craft to start with. However, after reading the directions he wasn’t so sure he wanted to try to complete the craft. Even at four years old he is quite the perfectionist. He is hard on himself if he doesn’t complete activities just the way he thinks they should be done. We have been working on teaching him that it is okay to have different outcomes and that you learn through practice. This was a great craft for him to work on learning that lesson. I started by showing him how I would draw a building and then he continued the process until he built his skyline. Then he was ready to play with the clay and was in heaven. Once it was all done he couldn’t believe that he had created such a beautiful piece. This wonderful piece now has a permanent place on our mantel.
Frida Kahlo
This was the craft I was most excited about. Since we have family in Mexico we love to incorporate that heritage into our son’s life. My son recognized Frida Kahlo right away but wasn’t interested in starting this craft right away for some reason. I plan to save this craft for when we have more free time and he is motivated to complete it. For myself I know I have to be in the mood to do crafts and I can say the same is true for him. If I am having to force him to do art, it really takes the fun out of it.
Faith Ringgold
The directions on this craft said to draw a place that makes you happy. I gave my son the supplies and let him have at it while I cooked dinner for the night. I came back to this adorable drawing of a “laser show” like the one we went to in Seattle last year. I thought it was cool to see that was something that had a lasting impression on him. He loved the glue stick since it was one that goes on purple and disappearing he kept telling me it was magic!
Roy Lichtenstein
While this craft excited my son, it brought out the “I can’t do that!!” side of him. However, I reminded him of the Starry Night craft he had completed earlier in the week and he got just enough confidence to tackle this project. He did request that I help him write “BAM”, which as you can see didn’t turn out as amazing as we had hoped. All and all he was happy how it turned out.
Overall
I love the concept of this box. Having my son get involved with arts and crafts is a wonderful way for us to bond and for his imagination to run wild at the same time. I think the age range of this box made it a bit more difficult to enjoy it to the full potential since the activities were a bit too challenging for my 4 year old. I really like that there is a theme with the month too since it helps tie the box together. With this month’s theme being “All About Artisits” it did make sense that the box was centered more around arts rather than crafts. However, it would have been nice to get a little bit more of the craft side of things.
