This review may be a bit different from you’re used to seeing, but, that’s only because there were many little pieces to this box, and it didn’t make sense to individually review all of them since they belonged to a bigger part of the picture. I completed this box with my 2-year-old daughter, so this may affect the review a bit as well since the recommended ages are 3 years and older but, regardless it was still a ton of fun, and she really enjoyed it!
This month’s theme was “Mind Your Manners” which I really loved because I don’t think it’s ever too early to teach your children basic manners. Obviously, there’s a huge learning curve, and they may not fully understand them. That being said, my daughter is a sponge right now and is soaking up a ton of new vocabulary. She has already started saying “Thank you”, “Please”, and “You’re welcome” to us and all our friends and family so this box works perfectly to continue to reinforce that good behavior, and give her a chance to have some fun.
The box came with this book called “Mind your Manners, B.B. Wolf” written by Judy Sierra. We began our night of fun with this book to get a full scope of the box. The pictures in this book are really cute, and even though the wolf can come off as kind of “scary” they were beautifully illustrated and the story behind it is fun and educational. The plot is B.B. Wolf is invited by his local librarian to have tea with his best friend, a crocodile, and some other friends in the area. His friend warns him that he needs to be on his best behavior around the librarian and the other characters within the story. He makes up a song to help him remember good table manners, including to not slurp his food, to excuse himself if he burps, and to be polite and smile at others. B.B. Wolf if generally a grump, so he makes a conscious effort to be on his best behavior. I thought the book was absolutely perfect and endearing to teach my daughter how to act appropriately and to be friendly to others.
After that, we took the adorable paper placements that the box came with and took turns ‘setting up’ our table. My daughter was mostly enamored by the cup which was cool because you could color and design them. She doesn’t have strong enough motor skills to really draw/color anything really but, we used the colored pencils and drew on the placements together. I really liked this placemat because it shows children the proper way to set the table. Obviously, in reality, this isn’t a big deal to know on a daily basis but, I am all for teaching children new things, and how to make the table look nice when you set it. Growing up this was one of the chores I had to do every night so I feel for older kids this was really practical and a useful tool for them. I also liked receiving the set of colored pencils because I love doing arts and crafts with my daughter, so we can use them in the future.
My daughter really enjoyed the next part…eating cookies! The box came with 2 little cookies, and they were really good! I only took a small bite of mine so my daughter lucked out and got to eat almost both of them. I was a little wary if they would still be good or have a stale taste but, they were perfect and tasted delicious. I liked the sugar sprinkles on top because I have a huge sweet tooth and I almost want to buy them again.
We used the plate and forks to eat our dessert that the box provided although it wasn’t very effective. I think they were mostly for showing how to properly set the table, rather than for eating. My daughter took the time to practice using her napkin and saying “Excuse me” when she was finished – just like the book had taught her. I also tried to show her how to properly hold a fork and knife, although she is a bit too young for it to actually remember and use it. I still felt like this was a good opportunity to show her and make a game out of it (Can you hold your fork and spoon like Mom?).
The other piece this box came with was a game to spin the wheel, and then whichever item you landed on, you would take that piece and set it on your placemat. Unfortunately, as mentioned, my daughter is still a bit young for this but, I think that older kids would like this and could really use this as a valuable tool for learning how to set the table. I also think depending on how creative your children are you could make other games out of this. How fun would that be? My daughter liked looking at the card and naming off all the different items, though. I had her pick up and show me what each item was when I pointed to it on the card.
Overall
Overall my thoughts on this box are that it’s pretty neat and creative. This is the type of activity that I wouldn’t have thought of on my own or thought to do with my child. I try but, I’m not that creative, so I really enjoyed the theme. It gave us something to do on a hot evening so we could beat the heat by staying inside. Unfortunately for the actual price on the box, I’m a bit torn. The experience of it makes it worth the price but, it would have been nice to get some items that were of a little better quality. I couldn’t picture myself buying this box every month but, maybe a few times a year as something different to do with my daughter, especially on days when she seems restless being in the house. I also think when she’s older, she will enjoy it more, so I will hold off for now.
