I have been wanting to try the Kiwi Crate subscription service for a long time now. It always has looked like something that my five year old son would enjoy since he is into science. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when they reached out to us to write a review for them. When the box came, I was very impressed with the attention to detail on everything from the box design, the inserts, and the organization of the items in the box. Keep reading to see all the activities that were included in our box.
Stackable Tops
Our first activity was making tops. The instructions encouraged us to try different variations and to note how changing the disc sizes and the spacing would change the spin. Although my son wasn’t up for documenting the differences in the tops he created, he did appreciate seeing how different variations performed. We actually spent the better part of an hour playing with combinations. He also had an idea to use a marker to design the top of one of the tops and noticed how neat it looked when it was spinning.
Spinning Top Games
Our next activity involved some games to play with our newly developed tops. I liked that Kiwi Crate included the games since it kept the fun going even longer. Creating the game frame was a little tough for my son’s little hands, but I was able to assist just enough to help him complete it. I loved the double sided game board. The first game was our favorite, we had to try to knock all the pom pom out of the frame in as few spins as possible. We laughed way too hard at the pom poms flying across the table! The other game that we enjoyed was using the included blank paper circles and markers to try to create spiral art. It was a little hard for even me to get the top just right, but once we did it looked so cool we kept on trying!
Penny Top
This was my son’s least favorite activity. I thought it looked really cool and I had fun playing around with the penny layout, however no matter how hard we tried the pennies would fly out. My son was concerned a window might break, he is a cautious kid no doubt about that! Still I thought it was neat that he was able to see another kind of top.
Blow Top
Our final activity was the blow top. The whole time we completed the other activities my son was holding the straw and top trying to figure out what we would end up using them for. While I was playing with the penny top, he happened to try to use the straw to blow on this top and low and behold it worked. He was so excited that he figured it out without any instructions. I have to say that was the highlight of this whole box. Seeing the confidence on his face was amazing!
Overall
This company gets it! As a parent, I want my son to have fun, but I also want him to learn as much as he can. Our box was the perfect balance of both. The booklet was laid out in an exciting way that was also easy for a 5-year-old to follow. The supplies were all very good quality and should last at least a few more months even with heavy usage. Based on our first box from Kiwi Crate, I 100% recommend this subscription box to anyone that has kids they want to WOW. They offer boxes for ages 0-16+ so no one is left out. In fact, I have already bought another one for my son that we can’t wait to dive into….and I’ve already bought two more boxes as gifts.
