A Little Background

Teaching my son Spanish is one of the most important roles I’ve taken on.  Since the day he was born, we have spoken keywords only in Spanish and because of that, he has a very good base of knowledge.  We continually work with him on vocabulary and conversational Spanish. However, sometimes it is hard to know what to focus on next.

We have never had a “plan”, it has been sporadic and random through daily conversations.  As he is getting older we have realized we need to step it up a notch.  Generally, my husband is in charge of teaching since Spanish is his native language.  I, however, am at a point where I need direction for the lessons as they are exceeding my knowledge of the Spanish language.  So when I saw what the Bilingual Box offered I knew it was something I would want to try out with my son.  Monthly Spanish lessons all packaged up and ready for him to absorb.  What could be better than giving him the knowledge of a second language?

A detailed welcome note explained more about the subscription and contained information about all the tools that are included in this month’s box.

The two pencils that came in our box were pretty cool.  Normally, I wouldn’t think to mention a pencil, but these were “luchador” (wrestler) pencils, which sparked my son’s interest immediately.  Plus they came in handy when working on the lessons.

This globe stress ball was a big hit with my son too.  He liked to point out on the globe where all of our family members live.

This workbook is packed full of worksheets.  It contains a worksheet for each letter of the alphabet.  One side of the page words in Spanish that start with that letter and the other side is a practice sheet to work on writing the letter.  This will be a book that we will work on throughout the summer.  Our box also came with a write and wipe folder and a dry erase marker so we can use these worksheets over and over again.

Our box also contained ten blank index cards and a “Spanish First Words” book.  We used the book to determine which words my son wanted to learn first.  Then we wrote his chosen words on the index cards and taped them to the corresponding items in our house.  Sure, we could have done this without this box, but to be honest, I never thought about teaching him in that way.  It was a huge success.  In less than a week he has mastered all ten of the words that we labeled.  The look on his face when he drops those words into his normal conversation is priceless and rewarding.

My son was excited when we got to a page in the “Spanish First Words” book that we already knew.  It gave him a boost of confidence to keep going.

What kid doesn’t like stickers?  My son liked them because the stickers are life.  I liked them because I was able to teach him some encouraging phrases in Spanish.

I love the saying on this artwork that was included.  It is definitely a cute little extra.

Another extra that I thought was interesting was these little temporary tattoos.  One says “Yo hablo español” (I speak Spanish) and the other says “I am bilingual”.  My son will wear these with pride.

Overall Opinion

I am so happy that I found this box.  When unboxing, I was thinking that $40 a month seems a little steep.  However, after seeing the material in action and the huge improvement in my son’s Spanish over the course of one week….I’m sold.  I could go on and on about the importance and benefits of children learning a second language. Especially when they are younger, this is the most important time to teach them and incorporate it into their lives. .  For me, I just want to give my son every opportunity to succeed and this is one area I’m choosing to put emphasis on in our home.
