Each month Bokksu sends authentic Japanese snacks and tea curated around a theme.  After receiving a box for review in October 2019, I ordered a 3-month subscription to enjoy with my family.  This month’s Seasons of Japan theme was the perfect way to get me in the spirit for the upcoming Spring season!  Upon opening the box I was greeted with a jam-packed, yet very well organized selection of treats that fit this month’s theme. To say I was excited to get snacking is an understatement.   Also, I admire that the founder writes a personal note each month.

Cultural Guide

The Cultural Guide had tons of details about each snack, which I loved.   It also includes a page that helped teach us some Japanese!  Personally, I enjoy snacks from other countries, since they have a unique flavor.  But I also love using the Bokksu Box as a way to teach my son about another country and culture.  My family enjoys reading and learning more about each item before we gleefully taste each one.  See the below pictures for examples of the details we read.

Now onto my favorite part of the review….the treats of course!  The February 2020 treats were broken down to represent the four seasons. Therefore I will talk about each season as a whole and which snacks were our favorites!

Experience Hanami in the Spring

“Spring boasts a short burst of cherry blossoms that quickly fade away.  During the cherry blossom season, people gather for hanami, literally “flower viewing”.   Friends and family sit beneath the flowers enjoying good food and drinks as the petals rain down”

The four snacks that represented the Spring season can be viewed in the photo gallery below.  This season was actually my family’s favorite with each of us favoring a different snack.  My personal favorite was the mochi, I loved the sweet sugar-crusted treat.  And my son really liked the stick potato, which tasted similar to sea salt and vinegar potato chips.  My husband wouldn’t stop raving about the white chocoalte infused strawberries.  I took his word for it since I’m not a fan of white chocoalte.  But he said it was one of the most unique “candies” that he has ever tasted and asked me to order more via the Bokksu Shop.  We haven’t tried the pear biscuit yet, but I think it will be a nice treat to add to my son’s lunch this week.  One thing to note – 2 of each of the mochi, pear biscuit, and strawberries were included in the box.

Dive into Summer with these treats:

“In summer, Japan turns to citrus fruits to help keep cool during intense hear-waves.  Citrus is said to be good for combatting heat exhaustion and boosting your appetite.”

Let’s start with the Sake Candy, I tried one and thought it had a refreshing citrus taste.  The ziplock bag was nice since there was no way I could finish the whole bag at once.  I ended up gifting the rest of the bag to Noelle so she could get a taste of what Bokksu has to offer.  The other three snacks were classified as “savory” and savory they were!  The rice cracker reminded me of a spicy rice cake.  It was very good!  The Dondon Yaki is hard to compare to anything, but I liked the fried treat.  My favorite snack from the summer season was the citrus-flavored seaweed tempura.  Seaweed is such a delicious snack, I really liked the tart flavor of this battered and fried treat!

Cozy up in the Fall with:

“In autumn, take a hike under the fiery fall leaves and experience fall flavors like mushroom and apple in uniquely Japanese dishes. ”

The fall season was one that I was really looking forward to eating my way through.  Fall is my absolute favorite time of year.  And when I saw the line up of snacks for the season, I knew they would be a win for me.  All four snacks were amazing in their own right.  My (and my husband’s) favorite out of the four was the black sesame taiko.  While it may look like a bird treat (comment from my son) it tastes like heaven.  The sugar syrup holds together toasted almonds and sesame making this treat as filling as it is appetizing.  The Apple Caramel cookie was my son’s favorite, we both loved the soft chewy texture.  The match chocoalte stick cake was unusual and had a soft springy texture.  I wasn’t expecting to like the cake, but it was quite pleasing. Lastly, the red bean crackers reminded me of animal crackers with a bit of red bean filling added.  They were delicious, especially is you love red bean paste as much as I do!

Stay warm in the Winter with:

“Wind down the end of the year by ringing in the new year at the temple and staying warm around the hearth with seasonal teas like genmaicha or hojicha.  At the end of the year, we keep chilly nights at bay with grilled corn and roasted sweet potatoes found at a winter festival!”

It is nice that Bokksu also includes tea in their box since they have such amazing selections for us to learn about while tasting them.  The genmaicha tea included this month is a mix of green tea and roasted brown rice.  Upon first brewing it, I noticed what I thought to be a nutty aroma, however upon tasting it realized that was the roasted rice I was smelling.  I gifted the Hakkaido potatoes to Noelle, again to let her see what the Bokksu box is all about.  She said they were delicious!  The mochi puffs are very unique, they are basically air crisps with a sweet glaze.  I really like the taste, but I don’t have much to compare them too.  You need to try it to get what is so cool about then.  Lastly, the Sanrio character Gudetama made an appearance in our box which I thought was adorable!  Although, I’m not sure how to describe the stick since I devoured it so quickly.  I would say it was like a crisp, puffy chip with a sweet side to it.

Overall

As mentioned above, I ordered the Bokksu box after reviewing one box for this blog.  I fell in love with both the snacks and the educational aspect of teaching my son about another culture.  With this month’s box, my family made an effort to try each snack together one by one.  We had a ton of fun taste testing each item, sharing our thoughts, and reading more about Japan and the snacks.  And of course, the treats themselves were as unique as they were delicious.  There are a few snacks from this box that I will be purchasing in bulk from the Bokksu Shop.  I am so excited about my next boxes from Bokksu.  I noticed the March box’s theme is mochi madness, which is sure to bring a smile to my face!  Without a doubt, my 3-month subscription will quickly turn into a year subscription.  What a perfect way to bring my family together each month!
