After seeing Noelle having so much fun reviewing the Dispatch series’ for adults, I had to get in on the action.  When I saw they offered a series just for kids, I knew that would be the perfect box to complete with my 5-year-old son.  I will do my best to review this box without spoiling all the fun for anyone that decides to subscribe.

Included in the box was a helpful checklist to make sure you have all the clues to solve the box.  That is incredibly helpful for my son and I since right off the bat it got us familiar with the contents of the box.

Next, we reviewed the letter from Johnny.  Oh no, Johnny lost his favorite coin and needs our help to find it.  My son loved this letter from Johnny and was ready to get started right away.

We looked over all the handouts included in our box and my son was able to figure out the colors needed to color the missing poster.  Again, since I don’t want to spoil all the fun, I haven’t included all the inserts.  However, you can see the front of the missing poster listed below.  The backside of the poster included a color by number that revealed the missing number needed to get a secret message from Johnny!

This is where my son became excited to solve this mystery.  He thought it was cool that we got to use the laptop to go to a website.  Then he thought it was even cooler than Johnny had recorded a message “just for him” to listen to.  Below is a screenshot from the website where we entered the phone number.

After listening to the message we moved on to using the flashcards and map.  My son needed to retrace Johnny’s footsteps to find out where he last had his special coin.

I’ll admit, my son is on the older end of the recommended age for this box, so he really didn’t have any trouble at all figuring out the answer to where Johnny would have lost his coin.  However, it was still exciting to see him work his way through the flashcards.  He is getting the hang of reading so activities like these are always fun to watch.

Once we figured out Johnny’s footsteps we headed back to the website to input our answers.  My son really liked using the laptop to solve the mystery and it was good practice using the touch mouse to click and drag the items.

Solving the above puzzle was the end of Part One.  This first box took us about 20 minutes to solve.  My son’s favorite part was hearing Johnny’s voice on the messages, he thought it was really cool to hear the “real kid” that he was helping.  I have to say, having all three boxes in the house at once made it hard for him to be patient though!  He was into box two before I could even suggest that we wait to complete it.  I will ask our readers to be patient however, as our review of Part Two won’t be released until next month.

Stay tuned!  We will be reviewing this entire box set in the coming months.
