Taking my daily vitamins is something I do without much through each day.  However, while trying to eat healthier, I started to really look at what was in my vitamins.  I have always opted for the gummy ones since it seems like more of a treat and I realized that there was unnecessary sugar included as well as binders and other items.  GEM has taken all that out of its vitamins and found a way to provide women the nutrients they they are typically lacking, in the form of a daily bite.

Sustainability

The first thing that caught my eye when I opened the GEM box was that they really focus on sustainability.  The included insert gave a brief rundown on the ways they are helping.  Personally, I really liked the idea of the reusable tin.  Subscribers get the tin in their welcome box and receive vitamin refill bags after their first order.   Also, the bites are minimally processed which is always a plus.  I was curious about what “algae powered” meant in the insert so I did a bit of digging on the GEM website and found a blog post.  Below is an excerpt from their article that I found really interesting.

“How is algae changing our world?

Helps end deforestation because it can replace soy protein
Most sustainable crop because it can grow anywhere on the planet (salt water, fresh water, polluted water – even space!) and double its volume in less than 6 hours
Helps improve air quality + reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to its photosynthetic qualities. It converts CO2 to O2 and for higher productivity algae, it can be fed emissions from power plants or ethanol facilities
Can be used to purify industrial wastewater and prevent harmful run off”

Health Benefits

As someone who takes vitamin D, Magnesium, plus a multivitamin every day, I was excited to get everything I need in one small bite.  The benefits listed in the welcome insert looked like just what I need too.  In order to get a bit more information, I headed to the GEM website.  It seems there are a lot of reasons to love GEM, espically when you look at a comparion to other vitamins out there.  See the below screenshot from the GEM website:

Taste

Now for the moment of truth, how do they taste?  I opted for the Peppermint flavor for the purpose of this review.  While opening the tin I could smell what I would compare to dates, nuts, and peppermint.  I personally couldn’t bring myself to eat a whole bite.  The texture was extremely dry and the taste was not something I could recommend.  To be fair, maybe after a few weeks I will get used to them.  It was difficult, however, to get past day 3 before I gave up altogether.  While I liked the idea and the mission behind the company, I didn’t think forcing myself to eat the bite every day was worth it.  After reading a few other reviews from bloggers, it seems maybe the cacao flavor is better.

Overall Thoughts

Based on my taste preference and experience with the only the Peppermint flavor of GEM, I cannot recommend these vitamins.  I know there are people out there that really love this product, but personally, I can’t see myself eating these every day.  I want to preface again that this is based upon personal taste preference and I am only discussing the peppermint flavor.  I love the idea of what GEM brings to the table though since vitamins are a very important part of staying healthy.  Being able to get supplements via a whole food bite is incredible.  Also, the fact that they are bringing sustainable practices to the table is admirable.  If only I could get behind the taste.  If you have tried GEM, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
