After really enjoying our first box of Home Chef, we wanted to review this subscription again since there are so many perks to it! If you’re anything like me, when it comes to cooking, I am not creative or good at meal planning. I definitely try my best but, between working a long day and having up to an hour commute, it’s exhausting thinking of anything extensive or new to try for dinner. Luckily with subscription services like Home Chef, now it’s so simple to have meals sent right to your front door without a second thought.

I chose to review the 2 person meal options since my 2.5-year-old doesn’t eat a ton most nights at dinner, and I always found the portions to be decent-sized so I ended up sharing my food with her.

The only ingredients I had to use from my own kitchen were olive oil, salt, and pepper. Even the meat was individually packaged, and all the produce and other items came in separate packaging. This may seem like no big deal to some but, other food subscriptions I’ve tried, don’t make it this foolproof and I’ve ended up inadvertently using the wrong ingredients. There’s no guesswork with Home Chef!

All of the products I received were fresh and of great quality, so that was also a relief since I know sometimes you can be sent some not-great items.

Meal 1:  Pecan-Crusted Chicken with BBQ-Spiced Carrots

This was definitely my favorite meal out of the three I received. Even my toddler gobbled the chicken up, and she’s never done that before with any kind of poultry. The only downside to this particular dish is the prep work took the longest for this one. I  normally don’t mind prep work but, after a super long day at work, I found myself wishing I had chosen to make it a different night. However, this was the only meal I felt really took longer to make than a normal weeknight dinner.

As you can see, all of the ingredients were perfectly measured out, making it just that easy!

One thing I really appreciated was how thorough the directions were on the recipe card as well. For example, I knew to wash, prep, and chop up all the veggies and other necessary items first. Otherwise, I may have been lost on where to start.

I cut the carrot slices a bit too big but, no worries, luckily that’s an easy fix.

I tried to make these look evenly and nice but, as the night went on I had to just get the job done.

Even though I had to cook the carrots a bit longer, it still was fairly easy to follow along to everything.

The final product turned out amazing! The chicken was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I don’t normally cook chicken that doesn’t taste a little on the dry side, so this was a nice treat for my family ;).

Meal 2: Sweet Chili Pork Lettuce Wraps

While I did like this meal, it was probably my least favorite. To be fair, I am not a huge pork person so that could be why. I don’t really like any kind of seafood either so this was a nice option for my family to not get 3 chicken dishes in a row.

One thing that was nice about this particular dinner is there was way less prep work so it went off without a hitch.

I also really liked how the lettuce was sent. It came in a nice package so the lettuce wasn’t crushed in the box, and it made for easy storage. Plus, I learned something new! I didn’t realize this was a way to keep lettuce fresh.

The slaw was a bit spicy, and I wish I had added a little less of the sweet chili sauce to it.

The overall product came out tasty but, a little spicy. I don’t mind spice but, my toddler isn’t used to it, so she just enjoyed the meat and lettuce for dinner.

Meal 3: Garlic-Thyme Roasted Chicken with green beans and apples

This was also another super delicious meal! I felt that the prep work didn’t take me as long as the first meal but, there was still quite a bit of work to do, so I’m glad I did this on a night when I had more time.

I felt like a real chef mincing up fresh garlic, thyme, and cutting up scallions. I wasn’t too sure how I’d feel about carrots and green beans together but, figured let’s give it a shot.

The aromas together while this cooked were really delightful and made my kitchen smell so good.

As you can see, it doesn’t look like the picture it came with but, I can confirm this recipe was delicious! The sauce was amazing and I keep dreaming of making it again. Oh, and apples and green beans also go well together. Who knew?

Overall Thoughts

Overall, this was a successful box for me but, I’m sure a large part of that is because as a subscriber I’m in charge of what I receive, and how often I want to receive a box. Home Chef makes it extremely simple to skip weeks at a time, and also choose how many meals you want to be sent.  I also think Home Chef‘s packaging and how they send all the items are better than other meal subscription services I’ve seen. It was quite fun to try some new recipes and learn some innovative ways to cook.  While I couldn’t afford to continuously have this box sent to me every week, I would like to keep this service around for every few months for when I need something new in my diet.
