The August theme was Pirates and Mermaids.  The beautifully decorated boxes never cease to amaze me.  My son and I completed each project together over the course of about 2 weeks.

Project 1 – Dress Like A Pirate!

I love that these boxes start off with getting into a role as it makes the rest of the activities more enjoyable once you feel like you are a part of the story the whole box is telling.  This activity came with supplies to make our own pirate hat, eye patch, and even a pet parrot.  Also included was a worksheet to help us pick our pirate names, my son went with Salty Spike while I choose Jolly Rascal.  The whole week we called each other those names and it felt like a cute inside joke.

Project 2 – An Arrr-mazing Show!

This activity included supplies to make our own pirate and mermaid puppets, a puppet stage, and a cannonball game.  My son loved to draw an eye patch and mustache on his pirate and even added dimples to the mermaid I had created.  He put on a few different puppet shows for us to include a comedy show that was “Arrrrrr the rage” in our house.

Project 3 – Treasure Hunt!

Among other items in this activity, there was a treasure hunt and a bag of, you guessed it…treasure!  When I saw the treasure map I started to wonder how in the world it would be able to work for every subscriber.  Then I noticed the cards with clues on them and thought the whole activity was pure genius.  The clues were easy enough for my four-year-old to figure out on his own.  I loved watching his face light up as he figured out where to find the next clue.  I also really like that I can reuse this hunt at least one more time.  The other item that we really enjoyed was the mermaid board game.  We love to play board games and this was an easy game to learn and quick to play.  I am planning on laminating the play board so we can take this on road trips in the future.

Project 4 – Pirate’s Booty Slime!

First off, my son couldn’t stop giggling about the name of this activity.  Once we stopped laughing we were able to set out all of our supplies and get started on making some beautiful slime.  The directions were detailed and the slime turned out perfect.  We make a lot of slime in our house but have never made a gold one so that was fun.  This activity also came with two fun worksheets.

Project 5 – Design a Pirate Ship!

This was an activity that I knew right away my son would enjoy.  We flew through the pirate shipbuilding in less than 20 minutes, but it was his favorite part of this box.  He liked that he was able to design the sails himself and also liked using the glue by himself.  I did need to supervise him on this project as the scissors were a bit sharper than he is used too, but otherwise, I sat back and watched him do his thing.

Overall

There wasn’t one activity/project in this month’s box that my son wasn’t stoked for. The Kid Wonder Box is such a joy to receive and it feels like every month gets better and better.  The box is always well organized and contains an amazing mix of games, projects, crafts, and science.  Learning through play is so important in our household and I love that this monthly box makes it so easy to incorporate.  The quality of items included in the box exceed the monthly price.  And that doesn’t include the time it would take me to plan all of the exciting adventures this box takes us on.  I also really like that you can go back and order past boxes (when available).  Since some kids may really be into certain topics it is a great gift option to be able to send them a whole box that is tailored to that topic.
