Kid Wonder Box September 2018

The September theme was Wilderness Explorers, which was beautifully depicted on the outside of the box.   As always, the contents are listed on the outside of the box, a welcome letter from Scout (the mascot) kicks off the fun, and there is an activity book that matches the monthly theme.  Something new this month was the box included an insert that gave more details on each project.

Project 1 – Dress Like a Wilderness Explorer!

One cool thing about the Kid Wonder box is the fact that the first project is generally where your kid will get to dress up in anticipation for the monthly theme.  This month our box included a felt backpack, a “compass” watch, binoculars, and even a badge sticker.  Right off the bat my son noticed the backpack was far to small for him to wear (he is pretty big for a 4-year-old).  Once I showed him there is more than one way to carry the backpack he was all over the decorating process.  Next, he moved on to use the marker to decorate the compass watch….unfortunately since it was a washable marker it bleeds all over the material and eventually it was all over his hands and arms.  I ended up washing off his design and we used it without marker decorations.  Once he looked the part, it was off to our backyard to start an adventure.  He decided to make a “fire” and set up a pretend tent.  We played in the backyard for about three hours that night.  It was amazing to see him acting the part and really enjoying himself.  I know we will get a ton of use out of all of the items from this project.

Project 2 – Let’s Go Camping!

For the second project, we got to build a campsite and paint two peg people.  I really like when Kid Wonder manages to incorporate recycling the box into a project.  My son’s favorite part was making the “fire” with the tissue paper.  For me, I loved the insert about the count and subtract.  We have been working with my son on adding and subtracting, so this fell right into our nightly lessons. Another really neat thing about this box is the fact that they send everything you need to finish each project, even a mess mat, and apron for each painting activity!

Project 3 – Wilderness Training!

Upon reading what this project entailed, I wasn’t sure it would be a huge hit.  However, I’m always shocked at how well my son participates in the role-playing activities.  The directions started us on training for a hike, with exercises like mountain climbers.   Next, we went on a “hike” and he used the map while I read the story out loud.  He got really excited about the map that came along since it makes him feel like a grown up.  I love to watch him “explore” and seeing how imaginative he can be.  Lastly, we headed outside for a scavenger hunt.  The label on the scavenger bag was neat since he was able to check things off by himself.

Project 4 – Let’s Go Fishing!

This project came with all items needed to make our own magnetic fishing game.  My son couldn’t wait to “go fishing”, so before even painting the fish he brought all the pieces outside to fish in our “pond” (aka rocks).  Once he caught all of his fish, we brought them inside for painting.  We pulled out the included paints (and some we had left over from a previous box) and my son got right to work.  This activity also came with a pond for us to construct, but since the weather has been incredible this week, we have been taking the fish to our “pond” each night and soaking up the PNW sun.

Project 5 – Let’s Make S’mores!

For the final project, we received all items necessary to make homemade playdoh, with an s’mores theme.  This recipe was made using the included powdered sugar and frosting!   I have never tried to make playdoh out of frosting before so was excited to see how it would turn out. It said in more than one place not to consume the ingredients, even though everything is typically edible.  It was really easy to make the dough, all we had to do was mix each color of frosting with a spoon of the powdered sugar and then knead it on the wax paper until it was the right consistency.  My son was able to complete all steps by himself.  The hardest part of this activity was trying to convince my son not to eat the playdoh.  Also included in this project was a Tic Tac Toe game board, which we took full advantage of.

Overall

This is a subscription box that both my son and I look forward to getting each month.  I love how organized each activity is and how through Kid Wonder is about making sure all supplies are included to complete each project.  My son loves that there is a wide range of projects in each box.  Seeing my son using his brain and imagination is so exciting.  Being a working Mom, I really don’t have a ton of time to plan these types of activities, so I  love that this box comes pre-planned and packed with adventure for us to enjoy.  I can’t say enough good things about the Kid Wonder box.
