Background

I used the Proactiv system back in my 20’s and had great results with them.  Unfortunately, I ended up canceling my membership when I needed to reduce my spending.  Over the years I have hopped around to different face cleansers, basically cut out toners, as well as moisturizers.  I didn’t realize how important each step of skincare really was until recently and just figured I had “bad skin”.  After struggling with acne-prone skin my entire adult life, I was excited to give Proactiv another try.  Just as a preface, I have very sensitive skin which makes it hard to find products that fight acne without drying out my face.

At first glance, I thought our kit only included the ProactivMD products.  However, after looking at each product I realized they sent me a mixture of products from their lines based on my skin type.  Since the quickstart guide focused on using the ProactivMD, that was the route I decided to take for the purpose of this review.

ProactivMD

Included in the ProactivMD kit is the Deep Cleansing Face Wash, Daily Oil Control SPF, Adapalene Gel, and a spin brush.  I really like the spin brush since it seemed to help unclog the pores around my nose area.  Also having two different speed options came in handy for different areas of my face. Personally, I liked the face wash, especially the exfoliating beads which gave me an overall sense of clean skin.   I also thought it was helpful that they included the Daily Oil Control SPF since it becomes even more important to protect your skin from the sun when using the  Adapalene Gel. Keep in mind though – it’s always important to use some kind of SPF for your face on a daily basis! As for the Adapalene Gel, I’m still not sure how I feel about this product.  It seems this is where my skin started reacting badly.  According to the inserts, I understand this is completely normal, however, I couldn’t take the toll of the wait and see so I decided to stop using this product after the first week.

Overall

My initial excitement of having my skin magically fixed by ProactivMD was short-lived.  After about one week of following the directions for us, my skin was having some major issues.   Admittedly, I didn’t take “after” pictures since I was pretty shocked at how bad my skin looked.  However, I can tell you that I was noticing extremely dry spots in some areas and oily spots in other areas.  According to the insert what I was experiencing was totally normal and should have subsided by week 4. Personally, I didn’t want to risk hurting my skin more than it already was so I decided to stop using the products for now.  I plan to reintroduce each product in the future, at a much slower pace to give my time to adjust to each change and see if that helps me.  As mentioned before I have sensitive skin which makes it harder for me to find the perfect products.  Since I know that the original Proactiv system worked wonders for me in my 20s, I will be going back to those products.
