The Seeds & Soil subscription box is aimed at getting kids and families away from screen time and more in tune with nature and gardening.  My son and I love both nature and gardening, so when they reached out to us about reviewing their box we were overjoyed.  The box we received was the July 2018 starter kit box and included a variety of items needed in order to start our outdoor journey.  Keep reading to find out what came in our box.

Surf Sweets – Organic Fruity Bears

Of course, the first thing my son opened was the gummy bears! Who doesn’t need a snack after a long day of watching me film the unboxing video?!  I was surprised that after eating two bears he decided he didn’t want to eat the rest.  I happily helped test them out.  While my son wasn’t a fan of the flavor of these bears, I loved them and appreciated having a snack while we went over the rest of the items in the box.

Gardening Supplies & Activities

Our box included all the necessary items to start growing not only white pumpkins but also sunflowers.   Also included were colored pencils that look like they are made out of tree branches and a gardening journal.  My son happily started to draw pictures in the journal of what our finished product would look like.  While we both love to garden, neither of us are very good at it, so we were happy to have clear directions that were even laminated so they are sure to last us through the growing process.  We both really liked to watch the coconut coir expand before our eyes.  Although we have used similar products in the past, this was the largest coir we have tried and it expanded even more than we needed.  My son really liked the gardening tools and he thought it was neat to get a metal set vs the plastic ones I trusted him with last summer.

Finger Painted Flower Pot Craft

The next activity that we embarked on was the finger painted flower pot craft.  I love that they included full-size paints so that we can use them for future crafts as well.  The little pot is so cute and turned out well.  My son doesn’t really like to be messy, so the finger painting was a hard sell for him.  However, he ended up having fun and not making too much of a mess.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

I have never done a scavenger hunt with my son so I was excited to teach him how to complete one.  We brought this activity with us on a family fishing trip and it gave him something to do while we waited for the fish to bite.  We used the stickers from the box to mark items as he found them.  He liked to count the items as they were found, although he pointed out the number should be better represented by the picture (the sticks, for example, should have six of them).

Fun Extras

The last items included in the box were the Nature Play Prompt cards and the key chain.  We decided to save the cards with a goal of completing one prompt each week.  I’m looking forward to completing those with my son and plan to gift them to one of my friends once we have gotten our use out of them.  My son decided that the key chain belongs on his gardening journal, so he hooked in on there and it reminds him of all the fun we had with this box.

Overall

This is a great box for anyone that is looking to get their kid more involved in nature and gardening.  My son and I have been so excited each morning to see how big our sprouts have gotten.  It has given us another thing to bond over and is always nice to widen his horizons through subscription boxes.  The overall organization of the box is very well thought out and makes it easy to start activities as time permits.  I also like that they start new subscribers with the Starter Kit Box so they have tools to use while completing future boxes.

UPDATE 3/7/2019: It appears Seeds & Soil is no longer open for business.
