Now let’s dive into what recipes came in the February 2020 Essential Oil Box!

The recipe cards are double-sided, with one side posting the DIY recipe, and the other side containing other notes and important information for the month.  Personally, I love this aspect because it saves on the paper used in creating the box, which is better for our environment.

This month’s theme was “Love Your Skin” and came at a much needed time of the year.  With all the cold weather, my skin was in desperate need of some love!  Included in this month’s box were six recipes, four essential oils, Rose Hydrosol, and French Green Clay, along with the labels for our finished products.  One thing I would like to point out on the labels is the fact that you do need to cut them yourself.  For me, that was a minor inconvenience and a place I think that Simply Earth can improve in the future.

Now let’s get down to the recipes!  For the purpose of this review, I tested four of the six recipes.

Clay & Rose Face Mask

This mask was incredibly simple to make thanks to having all the ingredients on hand.  Rose Hydrosol is similar to essential oil, however, it is less concentrated and has a more subtle scent. Since it is known to be gentle and perfect for people with sensitive skin such as mine, I was excited to give the mask a try.  After quickly stirring the Rose Hydrosol and French Green Clay together, I was ready to try the mask.  My finished product was a bit runny, however, I was able to still get great coverage on my face.  Ten minutes after applying the mask, I took it off to a smooth and soft face.  This is a recipe I will be recreating at least a few more times before Spring!

Espresso Diffuser Blend

While I don’t own a diffuser, I still wanted to make the Espresso oil blend to save for other recipes down the line.  After all, I love all things coffee, so I figured I would love this blend as well.  The first thing I noticed was the smaller bottle of Coffee Oil.  However, once I started to measure it out I noticed it was actually extremely thick and concentrated.  I think I will try my hand at making a shower steamer with the Espresso scent as a way to wake me up in the mornings.  Likewise, I think I will eventually use a combination of the coffee and past peppermint oil to make a deodorizing room spray, based on a recipe from last month’s box.

Veins Sugar Scrub

I have an obsession with sugar scrubs.  Getting a new scrub in subscription boxes is one of my favorite things.  That being said, I very rarely make my own scrub, mostly because I never had essential oils on hand that I wanted to use for such a recipe.  That is where I love the SImply Earth box, with them sending me essential oils each month, not only can I make the suggested recipes, I can also go back and use my favorite oils to make my own favorite products.  I really liked this Veins Scrub and found it very easy to make.  I did basically end up with two versions of this product in the end, which isn’t the worst thing that could happen!  See the below notes for my full explanation.

Skin Healing Body Butter

The body butter recipe called for the Veins essential oil, which from what I understand is used to specifically treat cellulite, stretch marks, or spider veins.  And I don’t know about you, but this is something my body could benefit from.  I am ashamed to say that I don’t own a double boiler, so I used a makeshift one like I typically do.  I’m not sure if that messed with this recipe, however, I can say that my Body Butter turned out to be more of body oil.  It was incredibly greasy, basically as if I just wiped coconut oil on myself and I had to wash it off because it was just so thick.  Not wanting to waste my ingredients, I ended up adding sugar to this container and making a sugar scrub.

Alert Roll-On & Rose Hydrosol Bath

The final two recipes were ones that I haven’t yet completed.  Due to the issues I had in the past with the included roll-on bottles, I decided against making this until I can get a better bottle to use.  And since I didn’t have any Epsom salt on hand, I saved that recipe for a later date as well.

Overall

I am very new to the world of essential oils.  The one thing I have learned though is that they are not cheap.  Oil such as the Frankincense typically sells for $20 per 15ml bottle, if not, more.  Therefore it is easy to point out the cost-effectiveness of subscribing to this box.  That being said, the pricing isn’t my favorite part of the Simply Earth subscription.  I personally love to make products myself, I like being taught a new “trade”.  That is where I find the value for this subscription box.  I would like to see is a bit more of the “necessary” items being added to the box.  For instance, the 1 cup of Epsom salt would have allowed me to easily recreate another recipe without a trip to the store.
