July 29, 2011

The last date my husband and I had was in May…of 2017! We KNOW that it is important to make time for our relationship, however, it is hard.  We both work full-time jobs and have a 4-year-old son who we adore.  When we aren’t working, we want to spend every min we can together as a family. So we exchange the “romantic dinners” for family movie nights and take out.  We trade fancy date nights for Netflix and relaxing at home.  The only problem with those “dates” is we are not connecting on the same deep level we used to.  Recently, I mentioned Crated With Love to my husband. They offer a subscription date night box that I thought would be perfect for when our son is in bed. I wasn’t expecting him to agree to go along with the date, however to my surprise he was interested in trying it!

OZpressions

The theme for our box was “Date Night Down Under” which brought us to the beautiful Sydney, Australia.  The welcome booklet walked us step by step through our date starting with OZpressions, which is a card game.  My husband and I are very competitive so starting the date with a game was a sure way to get him to engage.  The cards had terms on them that are considered Australian slang.  The object was to guess what the phrases meant.  We laughed so hard at each other trying to pronounce the words, that it didn’t matter that we each only knew two of the terms.  This game ended up being our favorite part of the date.

The Royal Botanic Garden

Our next activity had us planting Red Poppy seeds.  We were to write on our individual peat pots one thing that our partner does that we are grateful for.  I didn’t think my husband would play along with this part.  However, he happily grabbed a sharpie and wrote that I’m a great cook.  I really didn’t know what to say, cooking isn’t something that I love to do.  Seeing that it makes him happy though made me want to cook him a huge meal right then and there!  Our date booklet instructed us to water the seeds each day and as we water them to tell each other one small thing that we are grateful for.  I really like the message in this activity.  Often times we get too caught up in life to stop and tell our partners how much they mean to us.

Visit a Sydney Zoo

After planting our poppy seeds we “headed” to the zoo.  Included in the box was a Sydney Zoo Booklet that taught us more about five animals that live in Australia.   Each page also had a challenge for us to complete (see picture for an example).  We made it through three of the challenges when I started to lose the interest of my husband.  The challenges were very thought-provoking and deep.  He isn’t one to really talk about his feelings so I was shocked that he made it through three of them.  On the last two pages, we decided to just read the information on the animals and save the challenges for another night.

Australian Picnic for Two

After the zoo, it was time for a picnic.  Or it would have been if I had been prepared for it. One item needed for the picnic was bread and guess who was out of bread at the time of the date.  Yep, this girl.  This portion of our date ended up waiting until a few days later.  We got bread and tried the Vegemite.  I almost wish we would have skipped that though.  It tasted so bad we both spit it out, at least we both laughed about it though.  The Eucalyptus candy wasn’t terrible so we both tried a piece of that.  They tasted like a cough drop without as much menthol.

The Sydney Opera House

We received a virtual reality viewer in our box that snapped onto our phone.  We used that to tour the Sydney Opera House via a youtube video.  Both of us thought that was a neat activity and something we wouldn’t have done on our own.

Memento

Each Crated with Love box includes a memento, ours was a stuffed Koala Bear.  My husband thought that was pretty cheesy, but I thought it was cute.  My son actually claimed it the next morning though and added it to his family of stuffed bears.

Overall

The best part about our date was that we slowed down enough to enjoy each other.  We get so caught up in life and work that it is good to soak each other up every once in a while.  It has been five days since our date and I have noticed that we have been much more playful and lighthearted, so I think this was just what we needed.  We learned that there is something to be said for investing in our relationship.  Can’t wait to see what our next date will hold!
