Each month Bokksu sends authentic Japanese snacks and tea curated around a theme.  This month’s Haunted Harvest theme was one that I was uber excited about!  Fall is my favorite time of year, and being able to taste test Japanese snacks around my favorite season seemed like a dream!  Everything from the limited edition box design to Cultural Guide matched this month’s theme and added to my already exploding excitement.  Also, I admire that the founder writes a personal note each month.

The Cultural Guide had tons of details about each snack, which I loved.   It also included a map of Japan with the origins of the treats listed to give the subscriber a better idea of where in Japan their snacks are from.  Personally, I enjoy snacks from other countries, since they have a unique flavor.  But I LOVE when I know the ins and outs of each snack.  My son and I enjoyed reading and learning more about each item before we gleefully tasted each one.  See the below pictures for examples of the details we read.

Now onto my favorite part of the review….the treats of course!

Organic Hojicha Tea

The cultural guide listed this as a green tea with low caffeine content.  Typically I stick to the higher caffeine content in teas, however, with the cold Fall weather here in Washington, I appreciate a tea that I could drink into the early evening.  The little satchels looked very fancy and made me excited to see how the tea would taste.  While it was steeping I noticed it had an almost smokey scent, which is because the makers actually roast the green tea.  The toasty flavor came through in the taste of the tea too, and I enjoyed the unique flavor.

Tsukisamu Anpan: Kabocha Pumpkin Red Bean

This was one of my favorite treats in the box!  I learned that Kabocha is a Japanese pumpkin and that anpan is a sweet roll most commonly filled with red bean paste.   I loved the sweetness of the bread and the dense filling equally.  I need to order more of these right away!

Kocha Black Tea Donut

Who doesn’t like donuts?!  After unboxing, this was the item I was most excited to try.  My son had the same idea and tore into the package before I knew what was happening.  While he wasn’t a fan, I gladly devoured the rest of it along with my coffee.  This donut wasn’t as sweet as I expected, but the batter is infused with black tea leaves which gave it a very unique taste.

Kurumi Walnut Mochi

My picture didn’t do this mini treat justice, so I did grab a picture of it from the Bokksu website.  If you like mochi and walnuts, you will love this delicious snack!  There are chunks of walnuts mixed into the dough that give it a novel texture.  And to set off the sweet taste, there is a hint of savory soy sauce that pairs rather nicely with it

Kinako Kurumi Walnut Mochi

This mochi is basically another version of the above treat.  And I can’t pick a favorite.  They both were delicious in their own right.  I liked the powder that covered this one since that was a bit different than the sugar coating the previous treat.

Satsuma Precious Chips: Salt + Brown Sugar

These sweet potato chips were another product that I would love to buy in the future.  They are the perfect balance of sweet and savory.  The added brown sugar really blew me away.

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Annou Imo Sweet Potato

This is my first time trying a mochi puff and I wasn’t sure what to expect.  The outside was sweet.  The texture is very airy and has a nice crisp to it.  Each one melted in my mouth and made me wish the bag contained more pieces….for research purposes of course.

Sanrio Characters: Halloween Cooke Assortment

The packaging brought me back to my childhood and my love of Sanrio Characters!  I only tried a small bite of each cookie and thought they were ok, my son decided he loved both of them though.  He named them his favorite items in the box.

Puchi Pure Gummy: Halloween Assortment

The first thing I noticed about the gummies was, of course, their cute heart shape.  Another thing that I thought was cool was that Bokksu chooses the flavors based on what color packaging would fit this month’s theme.  Rightly so, grape and orange were featured.  I wasn’t expecting the outside to be on the sour side, but it made the sweet real fruit juice on the inside seem that much sweeter!  These are a really fun treat, I would love to buy some more to add to my son’s lunch box on occasion.

Butter Corn Rice Crackers

These small treats packed some big flavor!  They actually reminded me of a softer version of Corn Nuts with a hint of soy sauce flavor.  My only qualm with this product was that they are pretty small.  Thankfully Bokksu added 3 of them into the box so I could get the full effect.

Kinoko No Manma Eringi Mushroom Chips: Butter + Soy

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like these mushroom chips, but knowing my love of mushrooms I figured I didn’t have much to lose.  They are very light and airy but have a really delicious mushroom aftertaste.  I’ve really never tasted anything like this before, which is part of what makes Bokksu so great.

Danran Okaki Rice Cracker: Uni

To be honest, I can’t really put into words how great this cracker tasted.  I decided I would give you the description from Bokksu instead since they nailed everything I wanted to say.  “This fried rice cracker really hits the spot with its rich, buttery flavor. Thick yet light, this cracker proudly boasts 100% domestically grown Japanese rice. After being fried to perfection, each cracker is generously drizzled with uni(sea urchin)-flavored sauce to impart the cracker with uni’s signature buttery flavor. In Japan, uni is harvested between September and April, making this the perfect time to discover this seasonal delight. Though uni is sometimes a controversial flavor, we love this buttery, briny jewel of the sea, and this rice cracker is a great way to try it if you’ve never had it before.”  Since I didn’t know what Uni is, I decided to look it up.  Turns out it is the edible part of a sea urchin.  You learn something new every day!

Men Zakuzaku Ramen Sticks: Gyutan + Salt

These are typical ramen sticks, these noodles actually have bits of cow tongue mixed in with them.  While that might not sound appetizing to some people, I found the flavor very good.  There is also a good amount of black pepper added for an extra little kick that I appreciated!

Kakimochi Mochi Rice Crackers: Kobukaki

This was an interesting snack.  While the flavor of the rice cracker was the main thing I tasted, there were the wonderful undertones of kelp that I really liked.  It wasn’t overpowering at all and made the treat that much more unique to me.

Baby Star Ramen Sticks: Halloween

These crispy little sticks were very tasty.  I found them a tad messy to eat, however, that didn’t stop me from enjoying their flavor.    As the name suggests, the sticks taste like uncooked ramen.

Onigiri Senei: Halloween Soy Sauce

Two packages of these rice crackers were included in our box, which I thought was great.  I loved the special Halloween packaging too since it tied so well to this month’s theme!  The crackers themselves basically tasted like rice crackers glazed with soy sauce.  They were wonderfully crunchy and oh so satisfying.  I’m saving the second pack as a special treat for my son’s lunch box on Halloween.

Otona No Otsumami Crunch: EBI + Black Pepper

The description of this snack alludes to it being a bit on the spicy side but, I actually thought they were not spicy at all. They had the perfect amount of crunch and the black pepper taste was delicious alongside the salty peanuts. I would definitely love to try this snack again in the future!

Overall

I don’t know where to start with this box.  My first impression was delightful thanks to the high quality and beautifully designed box.  Upon opening it up I was then greeted with a jam-packed, yet very well organized selection of treats.  The cultural guide was great too since it allowed me to learn more about the cultural and about each treat as I began to taste test them all.  And of course, the actually treats themselves were complete game-changers to the way I snack.  I will be longing for most of these items!  This is a box that I would splurge on either for myself or as a gift to someone.  I wouldn’t be hesitant to order a year subscription, it was THAT good.
