July’s theme was Fun at the Farm.  I always like how the box matches the monthly theme and how brightly colored each box is.  My son has grown fond of the little welcome note from Scout and he looks forward to reading what the adventure will include.  The side of the box shows the full contents, which I find helpful.  My son and I completed each project together over the course of about 1 week.

Project 1 – Dress Like a Farmer!

What better way to kick off this fun theme than by dressing the part?  My son got to decorate his apron, make a handprint cow bandanna, and even his own cowbell.  While his favorite part was doing the crafts on his own, my favorite part was watching him do those crafts.  I really like how this box in geared toward activities that he can complete on his own.  I can see his confidence grow with each completed project.  We had so much fun playing dress-up and all the final products will be played with for months down the road.

Project 2 – Down on the Farm!

Once my son was dressed for the part, he was ready to build his barn and take care of his animals.  The barn was easily assembled by my son with no help from me. He really liked how the barn could fold down, which gave him more room to play with the animals.  I liked the wooden characters and can see those being around in our toy bin for years to come.  The quality of the barn and characters was top notch.  The barn is a nice thick cardstock that has withstood a week of play by a four-year-old.

Project 3 – Animal Bowling!

We were both surprised at the number of different activities included in this project.  The first thing on the list was to play “Farmer Says” which is “Simon Says” but, for farmers.  After playing that for a few minutes my son wanted to get to the bowling.  After assembling our pieces we started to bowl.  Knocking down the pieces proved too easy for us, so to make it a little harder we decided that one person would make the animal sound and the other person would try to knock down ONLY that piece.  Next up was the chore list, which was almost like a game of charades.  My son loves to do chores so he thought this was a very cool activity.  The last thing in our project was counting “berries”.  Not pictured is the clothespin that we used to pick up the berries and count them as we go.  My son had so much fun he didn’t even realize that he was learning in the process.

Project 4 – Farmer’s Market!

This was my favorite part of this month’s box.  It included all the supplies necessary to open and run our own “farmer’s market”.  Everything in this project was a home run with my son.  The fact that he was learning while he was having a blast playing was the icing on the cake.  He and I normally play “toy store”  using the same principles, so he is used to taking the money and making the change.  What we haven’t done before is to make a business plan, name tag, or take inventory.  All of that and more were included in this project.  We have played with the items in this activity for over a week and still have a blast each time.

Project 5 – Grow a Garden!

The final project was packed to the brim.  My son and I are into indoor gardening and it is always fun to watch our seeds sprout, so we were excited to be able to plant the included radish seeds.  Decorating the pot and painting the bee rock were my son’s favorite parts of his project.  We both appreciated the inserts, which showed him a visual of what will happen with our seeds.  We have enjoyed checking in on the seeds and transferring them to his well-decorated pot.  Now we are patiently waiting to bring our sprouts outside and hopefully enjoy a radish or two.

Overall

This is our third Kid Wonder box and every single one has provided weeks of enjoyment.  I really like how everything is organized into projects, making it easy to pull one out every day or so.  The projects are well thought out and exciting for different personalities.  If there is one thing in the project that my son isn’t interested in, we skip to the next activity in the project.  This box has been a great way to bond with my son this summer.

Spoiler Alert: Next month’s theme will be  “Let’s Play Pirates and Mermaids”.
