Mommy Crates is a new subscription box which launched in May 2018.  The boxes are curated to be enjoyed by moms and their children. There are many boxes out there for women and many boxes out there for kids.  However, Melissa, the curator of Mommy Crates noticed that there was a lack of boxes that combined the two, so she made her own box.  I love the idea behind this box.  It brings to light the much-needed balance of what being a mom is all about.  Yes, I love to spend time with my son but, I also love (and need) to take care of myself.  After all, I’m a better Mom when my cup is full.

July’s theme was “Space”, which is a subject that my son and I are interested in.  Included in the box was a brochure that had information about Mommy Crates, a creative mood sand recipe, and information on the items included in our crate.  Read on to find out what was included in our July 2018 Mommy Crates box.  All items, except the shirt, are also for sale as a product in the Mommy Crates online shop, therefore I based retail values on that information.

Child Size T-Shirt – Pigs in Space Pun

Estimated Retail Value: $12

Puns are always used in full force at our house.  My son never misses an opportunity to tell me a good pun, and I happily return the favor.  We both thought this shirt was punny.  The overall quality of the shirt is very nice, thick, and 100% cotton.  I washed it once (inside out) to see if the decal would remain intact and it held up very well.  We will get a lot of use out of this shirt.

Banana Astronaut Treat

Retail Value: $5.99

We both were excited to get this in the box.  I know we could easily buy a similar product ourselves, however, I can’t see myself buying it on a whim.  My son is very inquisitive about the life of an astronaut.  He wants to know what they eat, how they brush their teeth, how the sleep…the list goes on and on.  I am happy that he was able to get a sample of what types of food an astronaut may eat.  The freeze-dried banana slices were actually really good too.  My son pointed out that if he held a piece in his mouth it “turned into a REAL banana!”

Saturn and Moons – Vinyl Decal by Lumpy Turtle Creations

Retail Value: $9.99

The next item in our box was a vinyl decal.  I will be honest, I wasn’t sure what to do with it.  We didn’t really have anywhere to put it.  Luckily, my son thought of the perfect spot for this decal.  He stuck it on the wall, above where he hangs up his Superman dress up the cape.  Sometimes you just need to have a four-year-old teach you how to be more creative.   The decal is very thick and easy to apply.

3D Solar System Puzzle – Magic Puzzle

Retail Value: $19.99

I love puzzles, there I said it.  I have been hoping that one day my son will learn to love them as much as I do.  So far, he hasn’t come around to see it my way.  Trying to get him excited about this puzzle was no different.  While I attempted to complete this great 3D puzzle,  he sat there cheering me on.  I got about three planets when he picked one up to inspect it.  As he inspected each one, they crumbled between his fingers.  Needless to say, my mission was aborted once those pieces were a crumbled mess.  I decided I would put it away for another day.  See below for a stock picture of what it would have looked like had we completed it.  Overall the pieces were of good quality and they’re made out of a foam material.  They were easy to punch out and fairly easy to fold into place.

Shimmer Space Lip Balm

Retail Value: $5.99

The first “just for Mom” item was this Space Shimmer Lip Balm.  It is made with all-natural ingredients and has a lemon-mint flavored scent that is heavenly.  I currently have this at my desk as my new go-to lip balm.

Jupiter Love Potion – Bath Bomb

Retail Value: $11.99

Upon opening our box I could smell the sweet scents of this bath bomb, which was listed as berries and citrus.  Although this was a “just for Mom” item, my son wanted to see this bath bomb in action.  We filled the tub and both sat on the side with our feet in.  He got to drop it in the bath and we both marveled at the beautiful colors that danced as it dissolved.  The scent was incredible and left our bathroom smelling delicious for hours.  I was happy to share the experience with my son.

Overall Thoughts

I really like the idea behind this subscription box and I love this month’s space theme.  It is always nice to have a box that my son and I can appreciate together.  Based on the prices on Mommy Crates online shop, I have the combined value of this box at $65.95.  That total is well below the $85+ that is said to be included in their boxes.  However, this box sells for $35 (+ free shipping), so the value is still certainly there.  Mommy Crates is a new company and I’m excited to watch them grow.  There is a lot of potential in this niche for them.
