Nguyen Coffee Supply – November 2020 Unboxing + Review

Price: $13.30-$17.00/12 oz

Website Description: “Nguyen Coffee Supply is the first ever Vietnamese-American-owned importer and roaster of green coffee beans from Vietnam in New York.

We are proud to partner with a 4th generation farmer, Mr. Ton, who owns and operates his family farm in Vietnam’s famed Central Highlands. Together, we set out on an unprecedented mission: bring his organic, green beans to the U.S. for people to enjoy fresh roasted and in a variety of brew styles.

Our inaugural offerings champion both the specialty arabica bean of Vietnam (comprising less than 10% of the country’s coffee production) and the famed robusta bean. For those who prefer a sweet and fruity brew, “Moxy” consisting of 100% arabica offers an unmatched experience. For those looking for a bold and nutty brew with asmooth finish, the “Loyalty”blend brings together distinct characteristics of Vietnam’s arabica and robusta for the perfect balance. Our strongest coffee is “Truegrit”, 100% peaberry robusta — with 2x more caffeine than Moxy!

Nguyen Coffee Supply was founded by Sahra Nguyen, a first generation Vietnamese American and a quintessential Millennial of the “Slash Generation.” Her multifaceted creative career includes award-winning documentary filmmaker behind NBC News’ “Deported,” co-founder of New York Times reviewed restaurant “Lucy’s Vietnamese Kitchen,” co-founder of podcasting agency “Listening Party,” and a 2018 Google Next Gen Tech Policy Leader. Nguyen is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, who fled their country by boat after the Vietnam War, and eventually settled in Boston, MA, where she was born and raised.

Through coffee, Nguyen is telling a new story and creating new opportunities for people within the global coffee community — from the farmers to consumers.”

I was really impressed by the beautiful and informative packaging used by Nguyen Coffee Supply.  The stylish colors and design made me feel like I was a part of something really great.  Which, after a bit of research on the company, turned out to be right.  See the above website description to see what I mean!  The information on the packaging about the origins of the beans was nice since it gave me a sense of all that goes into my cup of coffee.   One thing to note was that the bags are not resealable, however, the included bendable wire closures seemed to work for me.

Review

I am a self-described coffee fanatic.  So any time I get a chance to review a coffee subscription, I jump at the opportunity.  Nguyen Coffee Supply piqued my interest since I was interested in Vietnam grown beans.  Plus the flavors looked interesting and unique.  I decided to start with Moxy, work up to Loyalty, and finish with the stronger Truegirt flavor.  The 100% robusta beans in Truegirt did intimidate me a bit, but I figured if I worked my way up to it, I would be just fine.  The Moxy flavor had a wonderful, lightly sweet aftertaste, with no bitterness.

Also included in our box was “The Phin”, which was something new to me.  The instructions were helpful since at first glance I had no idea what to do with it.  Since it was packed in a separate box with the Loyalty blend, I decided I should try using it with that flavor.  The Phin was super easy to use, and my coffee turned out flawless.  Much like espresso, it was strong, and to the point.  I enjoyed this cup with only a bit of heavy cream and really enjoyed the flavor of the Loyalty Roast, the smoked caramel really stood out.  Now that I know how easy a phin is to use, I will be using it a lot in the future.

I was right to be a bit hesitant about the Truegrit flavor.  It was a bold, strong roast indeed.  It took me a few sips to really get to a point where I could enjoy the taste.  After the initial shock of the strength, I ended up really liking the smoothness that it offered.  I can also vouch for it being 2x stronger than Moxy, there was no need for an afternoon cup when I started my day with Truegrit!

Overall

I really enjoyed the different blends that Nguyen Coffee Supply sent over for review.  Each flavor had something different to offer, however, they were all very enjoyable in their own right.  If I had to pick my favorite, I would go with Moxy since I really liked the sweet notes.  Being a newcomer to the Vietnamese Coffee scene, I was also really appreciative of the include phin.  Between the beans and the phin, I was able to immerse myself further in the Vietnamese experience.  If you are looking to try some really amazing coffee, look no further than Nguyen Coffee Supply.
