I have been eyeing this artisanal dessert box from Phivi for a while now so I was super excited to finally review it for our readers.  Who doesn’t love dessert?  And since we’ve all been stuck at home for months, I thought the travel theme was the perfect way to experience some new places.  One can dream, right?  This month the subscribers of Phivi get to experience a bite of Italy, Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey, and more.

I was happy to see that the box was packed very well.  First in an outer thermal bag and also included an ice pack inside the main box.  All items arrived fresh, although maybe not as visually appealing as they were when originally packed.  I did place the whole box in my fridge for a few hours before taking pictures and taste testing each item, which seemed to help.

Italian Rainbow Cookies – Retail Value: $2.50

My picture didn’t do these amazing “cookies” justice.  To be honest, my family couldn’t wait to try them and the pressure of taking a picture while drooling was too much to bear.  Having never tried an Italian Rainbow Cookie, I wasn’t sure what to expect.   The amount of time it must take to make these incredible treats must be astronomical.  The top and bottom layers are chocolate, then they alternate layers of cake and raspberry jam.  I tried to get a bit of some of the chocolate, cake, and raspberry filling all at once to get the full experience.  While I wasn’t expecting an almond cake, it was a perfect combination with the other flavors. They are as delicious as they are beautiful.

Pistachio Baklava – Retail Value: $1.50

Where do I start with this dessert?  I happen to love pistachios however have never tried Baklava.  The light crispy layers of pilo combined were combined with a sweet orange blossom syrup, then offset by salty pistachio bits.  This was a bit sweeter than I expected, which made it the perfect treat to share with my family.  Out of everything in the box, this was my husband’s favorite.  This treat can be found in the Marketplace, and it states that it can be shipped anywhere in the US.  These will be the perfect dessert to get for my husband’s birthday this year.

Raspberry Rose Macaron – Retail Value: $2.50

While this treat arrived a little banged up, it didn’t affect the taste at all.  I can’t say that I was in love with the rose flavor of this macaroon, however, I thought everything else was delicious.  Floral notes generally aren’t for me.  It was perfectly crisp and very sweet.  Everything I typically love in a macaroon.

Vietnamese Coffee Cake Pop – Retail Value: $2.50

Of course, my son wanted to claim this treat for himself.  I got lucky that it contained coffee and therefore I could enjoy it without feeling guilty for taking it from him.  Don’t worry, he got to enjoy a tiny bite, and claimed it wasn’t his favorite cake pop.  I on the other hand thought it was perfection.  The middle was so soft and delicious.  The coffee and chocolate together were what I imagine heaven to be like.  I would buy these in bulk for gifts around the office.

Alfajores – Retail Value: $5

I actually tried these cookies before reading what the ingredients were.  The taste is that of a butter cookie sandwich with a hint of lemon, then filled with dulce de leche.  I expected it to be more of a soft cookie, however, the ones in my box crumbled as we ate them.  My husband enjoyed his with his cookie with his morning coffee and said they were delicious.  My son and I decided to share the other one and agreed that they were delightful.  I have never heard of alfajores before now and am glad we all got a chance to try them.

Brigadeiros – Retail Value: $3.00

Hands down these were my favorite items in the box.  These little truffles taste like brownie bites covered in chocolate sprinkles.  They are bite-sized so perfect for someone that wants a small treat without breaking their whole daily sugar intake.   I had to do some research and see if I can try to make these in the future for my family.  Turns out,  they are made from only five ingredients – sweetened condensed milk, chocolate sprinkles, unsweetened cocoa powder, unsalted butter, and salt.  Since I happen to have all those ingredients on hand, I plan on whipping up a batch of these for a weekend treat.    When I decided to review this box, I never thought I might find a treat that I can actually make at home.  This is a huge plus for me since my son and I love trying new recipes together.

Devil’s Food Cupcake – Retail Value: $3.50

Since I know how much my son loves chocolate, I decided to save this treat for him to enjoy.  I was able to snag a small bite and thought it tasted a little dried out.  To add some moisture back to it, we decide to microwave it for fifteen seconds with a wet paper towel over it.  That did the trick.  The frosting melted a tiny bit, but the cake itself tasted like it was fresh out of the oven.  My son thought the sprinkles were a fun touch and said it was super rich in flavor.  I loved that it came in a reusable mason jar!

Honey Cake – Retail Value: $4.00

This was another household favorite from the box.  Like the cupcake above, I was only able to snag one bite, but I am glad I did. It tastes like a fluffy cheesecake.  The honey graham cracker bottom paired with a light whipped topping made for a perfect summer treat.  No doubt about it, I would order these in bulk for my family to enjoy.  Or maybe this is another recipe my son and I can try to tackle at home.  It was delicious.

Overall

After researching prices on each item, I was shocked that the retail value of all items only came to $25.  Bakeries were I live are a lot more expensive than the prices listed on the Phivi Marketplace.  In my area, I would estimate all these items closer to about $40 if I walked into a local bakery.  However, I have to keep in mind that the retail pricing above is when you are buying a higher quantity.  The prices I listed are simply a calculation of splitting a bulk order which doesn’t translate correctly since the bakeries don’t sell single items.  Plus that doesn’t include any shipping costs, which I would expect are high considering the thermal bag, ice pack, and overnight shipping.  The bottom line, the overall price of the box is exceptional for the area I live in.  Moreover, I am in love with the experience of the box.  Especially during this time, when my family and I are missing on our summer travel adventures.  Having a box come to our home that we all get to enjoy together was my idea of a perfect weekend.  This is a subscription box I would feel good about signing up for.
